Monocarpic

A plant that dies after blooming once. A similar term in palm literature is "hapaxanthic" which is also used to describe plants with one flowering event, the completion of which triggers death. In most cases there is a period of several years between the emergence of the first flowers and the setting of the last fruit. Example: Caryota urens is monocarpic.
