HIPS originated in 1974 when a small group of palm lovers on Hawaii Island joined together to share their interest in growing palms in Hawaii. They recognized that Hawaii’s wide variety of climates offered the opportunity to cultivate most of the world’s estimated 2,700 species of palms. The legacy of these founding members can be found in the mature specimens that exist in gardens throughout the island.
Interest has continued and membership has grown to nearly 150, representing the State of Hawaii, mainland USA and several foreign countries. HIPS has become an association of people as varied as the palms that they are growing. Our members include: the backyard grower, those who want to learn how to identify palms beyond the coconut, nurserymen, academics and those of us who travel the world viewing or collecting rare palms to satisfy our palm addiction.
Projects, such as the Panaewa Rainforest Zoo palm plantings, were developed to share the group’s enthusiasm for palms. With the combined efforts of palm society members, Hawaii County, the zoo staff and the Hilo business community, there are now over 100 species of palms available for the public to view at the zoo.
Sharing information on every topic that relates to palms, including the frustration of failures along with the thrill of success in growing a healthy palm, HIPS has developed into an interesting and interested group of palm fanciers and experts who love to have fun with their “fronds.”

PALM DISEASES AND PESTS IN HAWAII
Click the image below to view the Power Point presentation and discussion by Scot Nelson, Ph.D.
Scot Nelson is a Specialist in Plant Pathology with the University of Hawaii at Manoa, College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR). Residing in Hilo, he is responsible for plant disease education and research programs throughout the State of Hawaii. Scot is the website director of: www.plant-doctor.net, a new, interactive website with information about plant diseases and pests.
His photos of palm diseases and pests represent data collected from plant clinics held at CTAHR over the last 11 years. Bring your “sick” fronds for Scot to analyze and identify the pest or disease afflicting your palms. It is best to bring specimens showing “early symptoms.”
June 7, 2009 - Meeting
HIPS latest get together found us at the fabulous gardens of Ho'owaiwai. Rich in rare and mature palms the original property encompassed 150 gorgeous acres. It has been split into 3 parcels, with the main part providing the tour. The property is at the 900 foot elevation and was once a part of the sugar cane plantations of the Hamakua Coast. It sits close to and above another world class garden at Onamea Bay - The Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden.
The landscaping on the property, begun in 1982, includes broad expanses of of lawn and some of the rarest and most interesting palms in the world. In 1987, the original owner acquired a collection of 50,000 palm seeds from South America, collected by IPS member De Armand Hull. The late, Ken Foster, a former IPS president and HIPS member, served as a consultant to oversee the germination, care, feeding and placement of the palms. Most of the palms were planted 20-24 years ago, and have thrived in the lush environment of the area, fulfilling the plan "to create an exotic tropical garden in which to work and play."
