Habitat and Distribution
Mexico. Atlantic slope in southern Mexico (Oaxaca Chiapas), and Honduras (Olancho), evergreen forest, at 1000-1600 m elevation.Description
Stem Solitary but caespitose (growing in tufts or clumps), 2.5-6 m tall, and 4 cm in diameter. Leaves 10-12 in the crown; leaflets 38-40 per side, linear, regularly arranged, and spreading in the same plane. Inflorescence with a 1 m long peduncle; flowering branches 4-9, the lower ones sometimes bifurcate; fruit elipsoid 1.6-1.8 cm long, and 0.9-1.2 cm in diameter, purple-black; seeds with deeply ruminate endosperm. Special note: Easily mistaken for a species of Chamaedorea, but differs in it's fibrous leaf sheath, bifid leaflets with unequal tips, and single peduncular bract. (Dr. Andrew J. Henderson)
