Common Name: Vonitra Palm

Vonitra fibrosa is one of the 'hairy' or 'cousin It' Dypsis palms that are plants with relative hardiness, long, fiber-covered trunks and the habit of branching dichotomously, all from Madagascar of course. In the wild, at least, this plant tends to be smaller than Vonitra crinita and Vonitra utilis, but maybe taller than Vonitra pusilla. Otherwise they do tend to look a lot alike.

Appearance and Biology
  • Habit: solitary or clustering with a crown of 6-8 feather leaves
  • Height: 10'
  • Trunk: single or sometimes multiple; 3" thick underneath the fiber; in the wild, usually branching close to ground level and then again 1-2 more times, with all branches growing very near each other upright, often undetected as branching while being covered with the long fibers
  • Crownshaft: none
  • Spread: 10'
  • Leaf Description: pinnate; flat to somewhat 'V' on cross section; arching; 5'-6' long; deep to bright green; leaflets fairly narrow and long making the leaves looks particularly graceful
  • Petiole/Leaf bases: 1'-2' long; arching; thin; unarmed; un-split leaf bases often retained on trunk
  • Reproduction: monoecioius
