Coccothinax pseudorigida is a very rare and very slow growing species here in California, but some are patiently growing this one in this state. It is an exceptionally ornamental species with very stiff, circular leaves. Due to lack of experience growing this palm, most parameters are educated guesses.

Appearance and Biology
  • Habit: solitary with a crown of 6-10 fan leaves
  • Height: 4' estimate
  • Trunk: single; 4" thick; covered with dense layer of brown fiber and densely ornamented with many dead, retained, un-split leaf bases
  • Crownshaft: none
  • Spread: 3'
  • Leaf Description: palmate; 2' long; nearly circular leaf blade; blade divided to nearly its entire length giving the leaves a spoke-wheel look; leaves thick and leathery; deep green on top and lighter green beneath with some silvery tomentum
  • Petiole/Leaf bases: 6"-12" long; stiff; unarmed; un-split base
  • Reproduction: monoecious
  • Inflorescence:
  • Fruit:
Horticultural Characteristics

  • Wind Tolerance: good
  • Salt Tolerance: unknown
  • Growth Rate: very slow
  • Soil Preference: well draining and probably alkaline
  • Light Requirement: filtered light to full sun
  • Human Hazards: leaflet tips are somewhat sharp
  • Disease or Horticultural Problems: none known yet
  • Transplants?: unknown
