Lytocaryum x Syagrus

Geoff Stein - Author & Editor

Pronunciation: lie-toe-CARE-ee-um x sigh-AGG-russ

Common Name: Lytoagrus Palm

Lytocaryum weddellianum x Syagrus romanzoffiana was, until recently, a true intergeneric hybrid… but now that Lytocaryum appears to be Syagrus now, it is only a simple intrageneric hybrid. It is still a very rare hybrid, and only a few exist in California right now. Back crosses with Syagrus again, however, are more common (still pretty rare) and are represented in a few gardens though out California. This is a nice hybrid with some of the delicate nature of Lytocaryum with the hardiness and robustness of a common Syagrus. Prominent palm grower and collector, Bill Dickenson is credited with creating this hybrid and owns the original tree in Orange County, California
