Potted Petra survives SF bay area winter and two summers so far..

It and one other were looking good on my porch until March..then the wife for some reason "watered" them with gray water she had in a pail..it killed a Angel wing type that was in perfect condition and partially defoliated Petra. Petra I think got less of that polluted water. Still,it after...

    Is this "Excellent"?

I paid a premium price in spring for this semi Oak leafed then greenish Croton at a florist. I never see the Oak/Angel wing/Fiddle leafed/ Crotons for sale locally anymore, been many years. So,I took a chance. It just totally changed colors over the summer- now a burgundy beauty mostly. No name...

    Hyophorbe indica 'Red Form'

I am tentative to say for sure as they were gift seeds from the in laws in Miami and they just know it was a nice looking palm. In their third summer they took off after two summers of tepid Hayward temps. The color wasn't until this summer. Well, one day it will be the only ones in ground. In...

    FICUS RUBY.

Four years ago it was a little plant in a 4" pot at Walmart. It's much more red than the plain variegated, hardier to cold, and much faster growing. One more pot up in size next year. Its in a good spot..not making unneeded shade.

Anybody heard of Miconia calvescens tried in California?

My thought is- its too spectacular a tropical not to have been tried. Hence none are for sale!...but just wondering since this is such a weed in the tropics

Show me your Stoplight. Or hardiest known Crotons.

Now,or after a freeze. I almost ordered a trio...but the price for those 4" potted plants with shipping was far too much. I might order one...but I will never live long enough to see that be a shrub. Maybe. Mrs Iceton is another..and the Fiddle leafed that used to be so commonly sold? Is rare as...

What if Red Palm Weevil makes it to the Canary Islands?

The Canary island date palms look to be easy prey for the weevil. I wonder what the authority's are doing to prevent a mass extinction?

Acacia dealbata. Naturalized in the SF eastbay.

Maybe other parts of the bay area also- but I can only vouch its doing great in Hayward- Castro valley where it makes small groves in bands on hill sides. Interesting how it sticks to those bands- not above or below the band you find them in. This is also called the Silver Wattle. Native to...

    Is this 'Stoplight'?

Funchal seems to be Los Angeles like and this particular Croton seems happy in the mild climate in Funchal. https://www.google.com/maps/@32.6642547,-16.9306073,3a,68.4y,186.75h,85.02t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s5QMk46C7lqcbdwXlvjNK2w!2e0!7i13312!8i6656...

Red Ti and co. Return from the defoliated.

Last winter was brutally chill. We didnt have much frost- but one 32f night and followed by weeks of rain and cold caused some of my tender plants to die or rot. Poinciana died for one. My Ti plants of color..by the time spring rolled around I had to removed all the foliage..it was so ragged and...

    Ficus 'Ruby'

Fastest Ficus I have ever tried. Faster then even F.macrophylla. This was a 3" pot Walmart plant in spring 2014. Most colorful of the various variegated species with red being much more long lasting then the others.

    Tillandsia capitata 'Peach'

Got this last week or so. I was told it carries the color best in light shade..too much sun and it turns grey. It's also supposed to hold the Peach color all year..maybe stronger in bloom I suspect.

My first ever Ice Cream Banana harvest.

One was yellow..so I cut the whole bunch down. It had sort of an apple- vanilla flavor. I expect the others to ripen better now that warm -70's has hit the bay area.

Watch this Mango go from seedling to fruiting in Newport Beach.

Use the street view on the upper left to slide from 2011 -2016. From about 18" seedling to 10' flowering in June 2016. So,if it was started from seed in 2010 or early 2011.. five-six years to eat fruit. Grafted Mangoes tend to be larger for sale. But,it could be a Manila bought at HD. Will have...
