Description

Small, single trunked/suckering palm, to about 2 m tall, with a very attractive chestnut coloured crownshaft. It has dimorphic leaves, with those on the young growths having numerous thin leaflets, and those on the mature plants having between 3 and 6 broad leaflets. Some plants don't change leaf shape as they mature, so the mature leaflets are also very thin. (Rudy Meyer, www.palmseeds.com.au) Editing by edric.

While very rare in cultivation, this pretty, small Pinanga is a common palm of the undergrowth of rainforests on Borneo to around 800 m (2600 ft.). It produces a solitary or clustering, slender, blackish-brown stem to 2 m (7 ft.) tall, topped by a whitish crownshaft. The leaflets on mature palms are rather wide, of uneven width and have thinly drawn out "drip tips" while those on young plants, in stark contrast, are very narrow and willow-like. The reddish fruits are thin and spindle-shaped. In cultivation it does best in the tropics under an established canopy. (RPS.com)

Culture

Warm, sheltered and moist.

Comments and Curiosities

Blume based his description of Pinanga salicifolia on three fronds collected by George Müller on the river Karang Intang in South Borneo, preserved in Leiden. The fronds have an appearance very distinctive within Pinanga; each frond consists of a densely grey and brown indumentose rachis bearing 22-24 regularly arranged short narrow sigmoid leaflets. The leaflets are all unicostate except for one of the lowermost which bears two costae, and the terminal leaflet pair which is compound and bears 2-3 ribs on each side; the leaflets have a distinctive coloration, being dark, almost chocolate- coloured on the adaxial surface and dull brown on the abaxial surface. The leaf sheaths in the type specimen are densely grey indumentose.
