Maluku, New Guinea, Irian-Jaya, Indonesia. Lowland forest, coral limestone.

Description

Solitary palm to 8 m tall; stem about 9 cm in diameter; internodes 15 cm below, shorter near crown; leaf scars about 3 cm wide; internodes green when young, with scattered brown scales. Crown holds 6 leaves, crownshaft 1.5 m long, green with dense dull red-brown scales. Leaf 2.75 m long; petiole 25 cm; 38 leaflets on each side of the rachis, mostly 2-fold, regular, dull green. Inflorescence spreading to 45 cm, about 25 yellowish rachillae. Fruit in a purplish spiral. (J. Dransfield & S. Zona 1995)/Palmweb. Editing by edric.

A larger Pinanga from lowland and montane rainforest on the Maluku Islands (Moluccas) and New Guinea with a solitary trunk to abt. 10 cm (4 in.) in diameter and 15 m (50 ft.) tall that carries a crown of a few short-stalked leaves 2 to 3 m (7 to 10 ft.) long. The long, green crownshaft is covered in reddish brown scales. A great palm for the tropical garden. (RPS.com)
