Parajubaea are a genus of single-trunked, pinnate palms native to South America, primarily in the mountainous regions of Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru and Columbia.

Closely related to Coconuts (Cocos nucifera) Parajubaeas are far more tolerant of temperate conditions with cool winters and/or cool nights.

All are large palms, most to 60 feet (20 m) to 100 feet (33 m) tall.

Seeds are edible, and roasted like coconuts and eaten in their native habitats. The palms are also an important source of fiber and leaves for thatching where native, though over-exploitation is a constant concern.

They apparently need to have cool nights to thrive; while they grow vigorously in Southern California, they refuse to grow in South Florida.
