Comments and Curiosities

For years we have found in our expeditions in the interior of the country species of palm trees supposedly new to science. Aiming to assist us in this discussion, we invite the American botanist Larry Noblick of the Montgomery Foundation of Miami, an old friend and collaborator, who for years has been studying Brazilian palms of the genus Syagrus, Butia and Lytocaryum . After the routine studies of herborized and deposited species in Plantarum Herbarium (HPL) of the Botanical Garden Plantarum, invite you to an expedition by the Midwest and Southeast of the country to the south of Bahia, regions these where most new species study. Everything planned and prepared, we set out finally for the trip that would last two weeks. In addition to the new species, Dr. Larry was interested in seeing also some species that he had never seen in the natural habitat. Thus, at the beginning of the trip westward to Mato Grosso do Sul, we stopped at the remaining cerrado of the region of Itirapina / São Carlos - SP to see a population of Syagrus loefgrenii, an acaule palm tree of a little more than 40 cm in height.
