Comments and Curiosities

This is a monotypic genus.

The Little Mountain Palm is perhaps the least known of the four species of palms that grow on Lord Howe Island, a tiny dot in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Australia. The palm itself is a short and stocky palm with leathery, pinnate leaves and a slender, slow-growing, ringed trunk--an adaptation, perhaps, to the extreme conditions it faces growing on exposed mountain tops in its island home. Able to withstand a few degrees of frost, it is an exciting addition to the list of palms that may be tried in the temperate garden, where it requires cool and moist conditions. (RPS.com)
