When Geoff Stein edited and published the second edition of Palms For Southern California over 20 years ago, there were relatively few palms that were known to grow outdoors in California. And his publication was just about the only reference available on the subject. There was no internet, and few places to buy these palms. Those early editions listed about 100 species. By the fourth edition, completed in 2005, there were over 400 species - hybrids and cultivars included.
Since then, more new species have been made available, and many of these are potential palms for an outdoor garden in California. There are now many nurseries where these previously rare and unknown species can be purchased. Around 500 species of palms are now periodically available that will grow in California gardens if given the right conditions. This web edition is not a new revision, but a whole new "publication," with updated information, a new format, photos instead of drawings, and including all of California as well.
Diligently referring to this reference will save you money, time, and sadness since you will be much more successful as one of those gardeners who likes to push the envelope and plant the rare and exotic new species.
