Growing Guide

FOR THE MARGINAL SUB-TROPICS

by Geoff Stein

This guide was initially intended to list the palms that could be grown outdoors in California. Since then as proven to be a valuable growing tool for the subtropical climates which are characterised by hot summers and mild winters with infrequent frost occurrence. The climatic range of this locations vary between humid subtropical, where rainfall is concentrated in the warmest months and dry summer or Mediterranean climate, where seasonal rainfall is concentrated in the cooler months, such as the Mediterranean Basin or Southern California. It also comprises locations with Oceanic climates, such part of the Pacific Northwest, much of southern Chile, parts of west-central Argentina, and parts of New Zealand, the same goes for a number of oceanic islands such as Madeira, the Juan Fernández Islands, the western part of the Canary Islands, and the eastern part of the Azores.

The majority of the regions with this climacteric properties have relatively mild winters and enjoy warm summers. Temperature variations can occur within different regions, being influenced on altitude, geography and the proximity to large bodies of water.

Temperatures during winter only very occasionally fall below the freezing point.

Mediterranean climatic zones, include: Algiers, Athens, Barcelona, Beirut, İzmir, Jerusalem, Marseille, Monaco, Naples, Rome, Tunis, Valencia, and Valletta. Locations with Mediterranean climates outside of the Mediterranean Basin include Adelaide, Cape Town, Casablanca, Dushanbe, Lisbon, Los Angeles, Perth, Porto, San Francisco, Santiago, Tashkent and Victoria.
