I've been buying small crotons whenever I see something interesting in the local nurseries. I don't know the names of any of them as the nurseries don't put tags on them. When you ask for a name, the answer always is "it is a Croton" Here are a few that I collected this summer.

These three were small rooted cuttings in 6" pots

Then there is this little common yellow croton. The nursery owner said this one was different because it has this little "tail" attached to the leaf...

I like the way this one starts off yellow and then fades on the older leaves to shades of fuschia.

This one starts off green with a red stripe down the middle. On the older leaves a band of yellow appears on both sides of the red stripe.

These Crotons are used all over the place to line walkways, paths, etc. Very easy to propogate, just stick cuttings in the ground.

Jeff - thanks for posting the photos. I am new to crotons so I am unable to I.D. your cultivars. Being in Costa Rica I am sure that you will be coming across culivars that are not available in the U.S. Keep the photos coming!

Really wish you could join us at Ricky's place Oct. 17. It seems like it is shaping up to be a memorable meeting. Your commute would be rather lenghthy.

I am still waiting for my Neonicholsonia seeds to germinate. Would love to see you on this forum more often.

    Best regards,

    your friend Ron. :)

    Great photos Jeff A.

Jeff S, is the plant in post #4 Commotion? It has a Rutherford hybrid type look.

The one in post #10 is one of the best looking Ovalifolium I've ever seen.

Post # 6 looks like Charles Rutherford.

    Jeff,

Thanks for taking the time to show us all these pictures. I think you have some down there that came up as seedlings years ago and never got a name to it.

    Ray,

That does look like it could be a commotion maybe. It would need some more yellows and pinks in it.

And I'm not so sure that, the small green and yellow leaf croton is a Oval. It dosen't have the classic oranges mixed in with the greens and yellow. And look closely at the leaf shape, it looks strange to me. I wouldn't mind getting some of that to see what it grows into.

    Hi Ron,

Thank goodness there are others that can identify these plants. I can't seem to remember any of the names.

I'll keep posting photos. I enjoy reading this forum.

I wish I could come to the meeting too. I've been looking for an excuse to buy one of those cheap Spirit airline tickets to Ft Lauderdale for a couple days, hmmmm...

The Neonicholsonia should germinate soon. I've had great results with fresh seeds.

    Best regards,
    Jeff

Jeff - If you were going to do the Spirit Airline jump (that is who I flew with going to the Biennel) you should come next weekend for the Searle Sale. Tons of Crotons, Palms and Cycads. You will never see so many Croton Society Forum and Palm Talk Forum members at one place other than at a Biennel. It would be rough finding all the goodies at Jeff's Sale with the difficulties getting plant material into Costa Rica.

Yes, keep the photos coming. I am sure you will find some cultivars that no one knows what they are!

    Kindest regards,

    Ron. :)

Jeff, my Ovalifolium has the same color and markings as the one in the photo but with less distinct blotching. I think mine needs more sun.

Ron, I've actually thought about getting a last minute flight and sneaking into the Searle sale! Too bad he doesn't sell seedlings - they travel great in suitcases. :)

Another nice Croton (with skinny leaves) in the sunlight.

There were a whole bunch of this cultivar that had purple/black looking leaves.

I came home with a whole bunch of cuttings. Should I remove ALL leaves before trying to root a cutting?

This one is growing next to the porch of their house and I always admire it whenever I am visiting them. I'm very happy that I got a piece of this one today.
