What is the cause of the white residue that is often seen on Crotons and most plants in garden centers. Is it from the minerals and fertilizers in the water or from insecticides or maybe a combo of it all? It is very ugly and it hides the beauty of the plant. I will wash it off using a soft towel with soap and water, sometimes taking a few washings. Here is a Fatsia japonica as example.

I understood it to be from well water.
