This is one of those crotons that has a history but there's nothing in print anywhere. In an old Croton Society calendar, the photo is labeled Exiter. Unless that's someone's name or a plant that makes a big exit, I have no idea what that means. Some implied it was really Exciter so in the absence of anything substantial, go with Exiter/Exciter.
