Update on the Variegated Butiagrus : Variegation is still appearing on new leaves and trunk is getting red. The twin seedling looks to be a Butiagrus also.
and the variegation continues...
For the second winter in a row this Butiagrus is yellowing out. It seems this palm can not take cool/cold. The palm pushed only 4 fronds last year with the first frond being stunted after the cold of last Winter. I have not put this baby to the frost test yet, as I do not think it will be able take frost.Maybe the variegation makes this palm less hardy?
Very cool that you have a viable seed producing butiagrus. About what percentage of the seed do you think is viable.....maybe these hybrids should not be called "Mules" anymore. Great pictures.
I just realized this thread is 3 pages long......I think my question above has already been answered.

Update ! The on the hybrid raised from a seed off of my Butiagrus maybe crossed back with Butia. The palm is now showing signs of teeth and a very black/brown leaf base.
Update ! Here is a few pictures of the ButiaXButiagrus. Leaflets are spaced further apart than on the parents, still has a blue/gray tint to the leaves. I am thinking the trunk will thicken this summer as of now it looks thin compared to the other hybrids.
Here are a few shots of the palms from another hybrid cross I did. The cross was Butia with a S.rom with a very thick trunk and big foxtail like leaves. These babys have soft droopy leaves at this time.
Scott, Looks like you are doing some fantastic work w/ the hybrids. I would like to come out & visit your garden sometime. I do not know if I ever met you at some of the CFPACS meetings. Great thread you have. I have been getting started w/ Butiagrus also. If you are ever in the St Pete area, stop by for a garden tour.
Mike, If you are ever over this way (Citrus Park/Westchase) come by for a visit. I would enjoy a garden tour of your garden sometime. Are you working your own hybrid cross? Scott
This cross using Butiagrus pollen back to S. rom is looking good.
I'm sorry scott for replying so late.
Here are some pictures. They look good. I have to mention, that the butyagrus is growing almost three times as fast as the red leaf based capitata.
On the last picture is also a capitata odorata its growing speed is equal to the red leaf based capitata.

Scott,
I'll have to post a picture of the mule you gave me a yr or so back. It's really picking up steam now! Stand by.....
Scott, here are the pictures. Thanks again![]()
Bren, The Butiagrus is looking great. I have noticed that after a year of ground planting they really pick up speed. Yours looks as it is starting the leaf-twist now. Thanks for posting the pics.
Update Hybrid #4: (From Oct 1996 seed) 11 new leaves have pushed out in 2010. Still has a more plumose leaf. Palm height aprox. 10' to top of frond/4.5' to emerging spear.
Update Hybrid grown from Butiagrus seed 2006. This palm has not grown as fast as a regular Butiagrus. Palm has pushed 6 new leaves so far this year. Base of trunk has not fattened at this stage. Fronds are also shorter and a few teeth are noticed on lower leaf stems. Palm height is aprox. 5' to top of frond / 23" to emerging spear.
Update ButiaxButiagrus still holding the wide spaced leaflets.
Update Butia x S.romxButia ( Butia mother x the reverse cross of S.rom x Butia) Best guess at this time of mature size of this hybrid, will be close to Butia. Fronds are shorter and plant is more compact.![]()
Update 6-11-11 hybrid (post 91 and 104) planted in ground this spring.
Update 6-11-11 hybrid in post 105. Still showing smaller fronds, but growing fast.
Here are two more examples of my past Butiagrus hybrids. The first 3 pics are from Larry (spockvr6) growing in Tarpon Springs Fl. Pic #1 2006 planted out as 3 gal. Pictures 2 and 3 taken 2011. Pic #4 is at Larrys fathers house planted out from a 3 gal. in 2006 or 2007. Thanks for the pictures Larry.
Debra, Here are some pics: #1 mother Butia, #2 & #3 daddy Butiagrus (#2 also offspring hybrid from #1) Pics 4and 5 offspring.
Update: The 5 year old Butiagrus offspring palm is pushing a spathe from a leafbase 2 feet from ground.![]()
