Update on the Variegated Butiagrus : Variegation is still appearing on new leaves and trunk is getting red. The twin seedling looks to be a Butiagrus also.

For the second winter in a row this Butiagrus is yellowing out. It seems this palm can not take cool/cold. The palm pushed only 4 fronds last year with the first frond being stunted after the cold of last Winter. I have not put this baby to the frost test yet, as I do not think it will be able take frost.Maybe the variegation makes this palm less hardy?

Very cool that you have a viable seed producing butiagrus. About what percentage of the seed do you think is viable.....maybe these hybrids should not be called "Mules" anymore. Great pictures.

So far 1 out of 100s. I have a few hundred seed in soil now to see if I can get another. I had better luck crossing a Butia with Butiagrus pollen and its a nice looking palm.

Update ! The on the hybrid raised from a seed off of my Butiagrus maybe crossed back with Butia. The palm is now showing signs of teeth and a very black/brown leaf base.

Update ! Here is a few pictures of the ButiaXButiagrus. Leaflets are spaced further apart than on the parents, still has a blue/gray tint to the leaves. I am thinking the trunk will thicken this summer as of now it looks thin compared to the other hybrids.

Here are a few shots of the palms from another hybrid cross I did. The cross was Butia with a S.rom with a very thick trunk and big foxtail like leaves. These babys have soft droopy leaves at this time.

Scott, Looks like you are doing some fantastic work w/ the hybrids. I would like to come out & visit your garden sometime. I do not know if I ever met you at some of the CFPACS meetings. Great thread you have. I have been getting started w/ Butiagrus also. If you are ever in the St Pete area, stop by for a garden tour.

Here are some pictures. They look good. I have to mention, that the butyagrus is growing almost three times as fast as the red leaf based capitata.
On the last picture is also a capitata odorata its growing speed is equal to the red leaf based capitata.

Bren, The Butiagrus is looking great. I have noticed that after a year of ground planting they really pick up speed. Yours looks as it is starting the leaf-twist now. Thanks for posting the pics.

Update Hybrid grown from Butiagrus seed 2006. This palm has not grown as fast as a regular Butiagrus. Palm has pushed 6 new leaves so far this year. Base of trunk has not fattened at this stage. Fronds are also shorter and a few teeth are noticed on lower leaf stems. Palm height is aprox. 5' to top of frond / 23" to emerging spear.

Update Butia x S.romxButia ( Butia mother x the reverse cross of S.rom x Butia) Best guess at this time of mature size of this hybrid, will be close to Butia. Fronds are shorter and plant is more compact.

Great looking cross (re-cross) Scott. This looks a good bit more finely pinnate than a traditional looking Butyagrus. Another great hybrid. I can't wait to give that hybridizing thing a go. Keep up the great work!

Rich, I am going to do the re-cross again. I did it over the summer, but I did not protect the seed and they taken by the squirrels.

The outlook for the variegated Butiagrus is not looking good. The palm only pushed 3 new leaves this year. The palm is now showing browning from the past weeks cold. The plant has not seen a freeze or frost but looks to hate cold.

Yes, I remember the rooted top. I was wondering how big, or what shape, it had turned into at this point.
