Hello from sunny Delaware and maybe the biggest croton collection in the Mid-Atlantic states! (not bragging... it's more of an addition). Some of you may still remember me - I haven't posted in a few years - just wanted to let folks I am still here. My croton collection is bigger than ever...

The Croton Society - is it folding?

This might be old news - and maybe I missed some posts about this - but is the Croton Society folding? I found an old e-mail from Connie that said it was because no one wanted to work for the society anymore. Just wondering... esp. if there is an update?

    Getting colors on StopLight

Does Stoplight need a lot of sun to develop colors? Mine is with all my other crotons, some of which have great coloration, but it has been staying very dark green. My Stoplight is the dark green one in the lower right of this photo. Yet a few feet away I have these colors on my Gloriosa (or...

Do I need to worry about low 40s?

We are having some unusually early cold here in Delaware. My potted croton collection is still outside. Do I need to worry about a night with a low temp in the low 40s? I hate to bring all my plants in too early - they do best outside in the sunshine and fresh air until right before a frost.

Question about cutting back an OLD croton

I have a really old potted "Andreanum". I collected it as a cutting back 1969 when my aunt in Hollywood, Florida saw me admiring her crotons and gave it to me (I was 11 and it was my first trip to Florida). This plant has been potted ever since and is now 5 feet high, after multiple trimmings...

    Plant food recommendations for crotons

What do folks recommend as a plant food for crotons? I've heard they like acidic conditions but is something like Hollytone too acidic for them? Should I stick to something like Osmocote instead? I also have Citrus and Palm food but don't know if they would be appropriate. Keep in mind I...

Cool weather versus benefits of outdoors??

Dear Croton Lovers, I have a question for you. As some of you may know, I am up north in Delaware with a decent-sized (potted) croton colllection. My goal is to keep them outside in the natural sunlight, humidity, and fresh air as late as possible. We are forcasted to get a low of 45'F one...

These may be common for you but these were hard to find up here. Special thanks to Lee in Tampa for sending me some of these as cuttings last summer! The first is "Pride of Winterhaven" Next is "Disraeli" Next is "Pele's Fire" (or so it was labeled when I bought it) Last is...

Curley Boy vs. Mammey = same thing?

I regularly check out eBay for crotons, since anything but Petras are hard for me to acquire up here in Delaware. Someone is selling "Curley Boy". Is that the same as "Mammey"? (which I already have).

    Fertilizer for Crotons?

What do people normally fertilize their crotons with? Since I am "up north" (in Delaware) mine are all potted. So, what can I safely use in pots? I put some Osmocote in my potted crotons when I planted them already. Is that enough or can I use something else in addition to get them going...

    Downward trend in Florida temperatures

I found this interesting post on another plant board about a trend for colder winter temperatures being noted in Sebring, Florida. Maybe the whole State of Florida is being noted for color winters than usual? The linked post from the IPS BB, discusses temps that Walt retrieved from an...
