check Pseudophoenix sarg. for leaf skeletonizer. larva of a moth that will brown-out ends of fronds - causing the leaflet to appear glued to itself/folded in upon itself. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homaledra_sabalella Beyond the palm species noted on Wikipedia, my Washingtonia robusta...

    Croton ID Needed Please

I picked up this little gem today. My limited identification capabilities know that it is not as it was labeled (Mammy). The pics do not do the croton justice. There are far more orange colors that resonate prior to the oldest leaves turning a vibrant red splotch. Appreciate any help ~ Rich

    Air Layering Question

Having (hopefully) pulled off my first successful air layer a month or two ago - I am emboldened to ramp up such efforts when the spring warmth returns. A couple of questions popped into my noggin' while planning.... * Is there such a thing as too thick or too thin a branch to attempt...

Exotic Angel plant name cross reference?

I picked up some interesting looking little crotons yesterday that needed some TLC. They were both exotic angel plants. One was called "Luna" on its tag. This one looked like a Mammy with an interrupted leaf. I checked the WIKI and since this name was not listed - I am guessing that Luna is...

I have also heard many good things about Attalea dubia - but have not found one to try and bump up to a ground-worthy size/try here in town. Thanks, Rich

Attalea (any species) in the "Queen Zone"

Keith, I have a 3 gal A cohune that I intend on trying 'in-ground' either the Spring of '14 or '15 - depending on how this winter goes. I extend the invite at your convenience to come by and see what meager plantings I have going in my non-microclimated inland frozen tundra. PM me at...

    Starting over with one croton

    Croton ID needed please

Thank you both for your thoughts. I will wait it out a few more days to see if anyone guesses what I think is the incorrect labeling for this croton. It is a nice croton for sure and is currently in the ground - hiding under some bouganvilla and Syagrus romanzoffiana over-head cover. I...

    Croton ID needed please

Picked this up at local big box. Nothing in wiki based on what is labeled on croton (purposely withholding to see if there are experts matching this ID). I appreciate your thoughts ~ Rich

    Freeze season starts today

35 here in the Central Inland tundra with a pretty decent frost. Banana leaves all fried. Despite some measures to protect/cover - damage noted on juvenile Roystonea, Archontophoenix and a decent sized Wodyetia. Smell of vegetation death hanging in today's air :( 10-day outlook paints...

    Freeze season starts today

Not with frequent and/or steady wind it does not. Take it from someone who not only sees an annual frost - but a hard freeze most winters since I've been here. Wind is your friend at those temps.
