    Bromeliads and Mosquitos

I have heard it both ways - mosquitos will breed in bromeliads, and mosquitos do not breed in bromeliads. Does anyone know for sure? If mosquitos breed in palms and bananas, in the area where the leaf attaches to the trunk, why wouldn't they breed in bromeliads? I'm guessing the answer, as...

    Stunning Mystery Ti

Maybe ScotTi can help. I posted this on our FaceBook page and it received a lot of attention. (You can click the link near the top of the page to go to the Tropiscape FaceBook Group). But no one seemed to know the correct ID of this plant. Does anyone here know for sure?

    Are these unusual?

Here are two Ti Plants I don't remember seeing in our discussions. One is weird in that the older leaves get red, while the new ones are pure green. I saw a whole "wall" of these in a garden and they looked pretty cool - different - more red than this one. And the other is just a skinny one for...

    ID For the Experts

I don't have a lot of Crotons, but have a few from cuttings we've seen around town. This one is finally ready for the ground. However, I have no idea if it is a "common" cultivar, or hopefully something a little "special." There is no telling what I could come up with over here. So, anyone???

Blechnum brasiliense - A Miniature Tree Fern

I can never get enough of these ferns when they are flushing. They are like a miniature tree fern, so can go just about anywhere. Sometimes they flush twice a year and when they do, they are hard to miss. Blechnum brasiliense. I have grown these successfully in coastal So. California

Cyphosperma balansae - a winner not grown enough

This small grouping is really starting to take off. I don't know why it isn't grown more. I have one 15+ year old outside in SoCal, so I know it should be tried more there. These are about 6 yrs in the ground (in Hawaii) from two gal size.

    Orchids As Weeds

Well they are growing as weeds. But I guess technically a weed means it is undesirable - which these are not. But I do have to pull 'em up from time to time when they start coming up in some places. These Nun's Orchids (Phaius tankervillia) come up almost everywhere - on tree trunks, on rocks...

    Adenium obesum - Desert Rose

I've never grown these before, but just bought a good sized one and planted it in the ground. It has subsequently lost its leafs. It came from a hot place to my cooler mountain location - but still seldom under 50ºF. Has anybody grown these? How tropical are they - really. I know they are...

    Can Anyone ID???

This is from someone who emailed me. An obviously new palm enthusiast. Does anyone recognize it? "The attached pictures are my presentation in short about my palm beauty, the palm lady full view, palm cherries ready to harvest, germinated seeds in paper cups, short palm planted in pot adorning...

Attention - Is this a new kinda Ti???

We found these Ti Plants, out of all places, at WalMart in Hilo yesterday. We thought they were so neat, we bought two. I hadn't seen any like this before. Have I just been unlucky, or are these something kinda new?

Dypsis hovomatsina - Top 10, no Top 5

There are not many of these this size around. When the KP Lundkvist garden only has one, that is all the proof you need. If you have ever been fortunate enough to see one of these mature palms in person, you too would be drooling. The ones I have seen in the garden of Floribunda leaves you...

    Gingers for Fragrance and Color

Here's an article from the Hawaiian point of view about Gingers - an under appreciated group of plants. http://www.tropiscape.com/wp/tropical-topics/gingers-for-fragrance-and-easy-color/

    Dypsis sp. 'bejoufa'

Dypsis sp. "bejoufa," "bejoufa," and more "bejoufa." And I haven't ever found one to buy yet. :( One of the top five Dypsis, for sure. And still no official name that I am aware of.

A Unique Philodendron - Philodendron warscewiczii

This Philo has one of the most striking and different leaves - IMO. I addition, it has one of the thickest "trunks" I have seen. It is not that difficult to grow, and adds a nice addition to the garden.

One of the Biggest I've Seen - Allagoptera arenaria

A palm from the hot and dry Kona coast. I don't know why you don't see this more often in smaller temperate gardens. It's the perfect size and an easy grow. And salt tolerant to boot.

    Anthurium warocqueanum in the"Wild"

You usually see these guys in pots or baskets in greenhouses. And you can almost remember how awed you were when you first saw one. Now you see them fairly often. But not very often in a natural setting in amongst other foliage. It is truly a remarkable plant. Notice the dollar bill for scale.
