Potted up a Col Gilbert Cutler and a variegated Tiffany today; the Claude Lorraine will have to wait a bit more. These jumbos are the ones that get extra moss glommed on for a bigger root ball during the air layering process. DSCN6155.JPG DSCN6156.JPG DSCN6159.JPG DSCN6161.JPG

Phil - how do you glom on extra ? I have experienced starting off with a huge sphagnum ball is not effective, often not staying dry enough and poor root development. What is your technique ?

Moose - the BIG air layers start out with a generous handful of moss, then as the roots develop, I remove the old Al foil and rewrap with more moss and fresh AL foil; repeat as needed for the really big ones. Old Al foil work hardens and is pretty useless and a false economy.
