I have the first draft of the Croton list for the upcoming Extravaganza. The first draft is about 90% complete, based on what else might be added in the next 2 weeks. I will add additions to the topic as soon as I learn about them. The list has already smashed the old record number of cultivars by a lot and has since broken the 200 mark. I had to add over 30 new ones to the main list. I am also working on the Palm and Cycad list and will post a draft here once it is ready.

Forum software limits the size of (.doc) file attachments so I can not attach the file to the post. If you can not read the entire list, or have issues printing it out, let me know and I will send a copy to you by message or email. One printing issue can be solved by copy and pasting the list into Word or other similar program and then printing it out.

The vast majority of plants are in 3 gallon pots with few possible exceptions in smaller or larger containers.

Got my croton shopping list wittled down to 10. If 4 make it to my cart - it will be a successful haul. Realistically - 2 maybe 3. The ones I am looking at are probably on others lists as well. That is what happens when there is only 1 or 2 of a cultivar offered.

An updated list from Ryan could change things.

Jeff - you finding any interesting stuff in the shade house you forgot about?

Update:

As of today, the Croton list stands as is. There are no new cultivars to add to the list as of today, with about 1 week to the sale. The week leading to the opening morning of Friday is, however, the best time for addition plants to be pulled, so more may be added. If you were to ask Jeff if there are any more to be pulled you would hear "Maybe.", so anything is possible. Like always there is the chance of an unlisted item (croton, palm, etc.) that is pulled at the last minute, that even I won't know about until its at my feet needing a tag.

I do have a few plants to add to the Palm and Cycad list above:

Palms:
Chamaedorea angustisecta #3
Licuala spinosa #10

Cycads:
Zamia skinneri #3

- The Croton section is just about done, unless more plants find their way here. I took a few quick photos today of the section to post and to induce reactions among the awaiting masses.

- Quick, identify them all... you have 30 seconds.

Ryan

- One more photo, showing the back-right corner of the section, shooting into the sun no less. If anything new enters the section, I will try to post something about it.

For any of the locals living in the Dade, Broward and Palm Beach areas, we ran an ad in both the Miami Herald's Home and Design section and the SunSentinel's Lifestyle section in todays newspaper featuring our up coming plant sale. Written like an article, it explains a little about the sale and what we sell. Hope to see many of you!!!

Ana - my list has only 10. So realisticlly I'll walk away with 4, maybe 6.

Mr. Harris will obtain a monster cart and load up his two agile assistants, Greg & Didi.

You want to learn? Watch these "masters of the croton mosh pit". By 8:15 am, they will have plants in the holding area - then return for round two. Then he will hit the palm areas. Usually out the gate and loaded up by 9:30. Truly an efficient team. LOL :D

After Team Harris leaves, they return to the Harris compound and start planting. They will be done before your new acquisitons make it home.

Oh, my goodness! Sounds fierce. How do they know where things are? It seems like it's just a matter of luck finding all the ones you want. Are there more helpers besides Judy? Is there an order to the plants? How do you ever find what you're looking for?

Oh, my goodness! Sounds fierce.

Best reaction to a 'Ganza description ever.

Update:

As of today, Monday the 30th, the Croton list is still the same, at around 95% complete. The Palm & Cycad list has a few new additions, gathered from all over the shade house. The list now has around 306 species and could still grow more; I would put it at 90% complete.

Additions to the Palm and Cycad list above:

Palms:
Burretiokentia dumasii #1
Calyptronoma rivalis #7
Dypsis robusta #7
Dypsis sp. 'Unknown - Rare' #7
Licuala sp. ‘Togu Budo’ #1
Nenga pumila #7
Pholidocarpus kingianus #1
Pinanga dicksonii #1
Reinhardtia latisecta #1
Sabal mauritiiformis 4in
Syagrus pseudococos #1

Cycads:
Dioon spinulosum #3
Zamia furfuracea #3
Zamia neurophyllidia #10

Ana - should they be in Alphabetical order, organized by leaf shape? Due to the quantity of plants, that would be a major undertaking. Hey, rember its not just crotons but tons of rare palms and landscaping plants as well. Plus, the croton area was full of palms just a couple of weeks ago. That is alot of palms to move, then all the crotons have got to be moved in. Probably took a whole work day with Jeff's crew setting the area up.

At my first "croton dash" - the area was half the size with just a single aisle down the middle. What a major traffic jam! Jeff doubled the area at the next sale and added a second aisle. Plus he has spaced them out more, so it would be easier to see and have access to the plants. Around 8:30 am, Judy usually reorganizes them, adding "crossover lanes" at the back and in the middle. By this time 25% of the plants have been thinned out. Then is a good time to re-check the area. I sometimes help Judy, and usually find something interesting that got overlooked.

There are more helpers than Judy, however she knows the crotons better than anyone. Jeff usually gets called away within minutes with questions in other areas. When Ray comes, its a better situation. I've suggested to Jeff to put all the "rarer" stuff all the way to the back. Actually he prefers it the way it is. That way everyone has the same chance - you just gotta look. Unless you are looking for the "standards", nobody gets everything they want.

You don't . Only the true Crotonheads...Randy...Mike..Moose..Rick & a few others kno this stuff by sight. I have given up Judy may be your best guide...but you hafta kno what your looking for &at.
Wear your running shoes...sharpen your elbows...follow the wave of folks. After a Ganza or two you'll get the hang of it.

Alright, thanks everyone. I will just have to go with my list and my glasses and hope that Judy is available. I am really looking forward to it! The last time I was in the croton area at this sale was about 8 or 9 years ago, and the crotons were outside, shaded by palms or trees, I think. At that time I didn't know anything about crotons and became enamored with Mrs. Iceton. I left with several of these and I still have them in my yard and continue to be enamored by this cultivar. What a great croton.:)

Damn is it getting restless around here!!! Found a few more plants ( that won't make the list) to add. Totally getting excited! AND......the weather forcast continually gets better and better. See you all at 8am, well word has it some will be there by 7:30. Waiting to get in of course......

Hi All,

We're hoping to be among those camped out at 7:30. Somehow we were both able to get the time off from work so we could be there. I've got my hopes up for a Dreer #7, if the croton angels are smiling on us. And, of course, a few other things. :)

Dang - can't you type the few more names? You got my croton senses tingling ...

Fantastic sale,I picked up a Blotched Williams Jennings Bryant,Columbia and Helen Rutherford.Lamar picked up everything else that Jeff had for sale and has contracted a delivery driver to bring the truckload to his house :)

5:00 am and this thread has 5 viewers, Hmmmm - betcha some are making their last minute lists ;)

The Searle tribe, Westies, Key Westies, and locals put on a great sale and (show). In my opinion the offerings were top of the line. And no one out bid me. Name tags have affixed and the digging has begun.

For an "old guy", Lamar can really move. Can't believe the how many he liberated from the croton area. Also noticed he score the Blotched Thanksgiving that was buried behind a massive pile. :p

Don't know where he is gonna put them all in that jammed garden of his. Heard some rumors that he plants them in his neighbors yards in the middle of the night. LOL :D

Might be feeling pretty good to me.

He may be filling in the waterway behind his house. Lamar has Probably highest croton to house ratio I've seen...tho Randy a bit over the top too.

I went back to day and picked up a nice Ortega's Hybrid.Beautiful and super slow. Some nice ones still left there :)

I sincerely want to thank all of you that came by to buy crotons over the last 3 days. Practically everyone on this forum showed up!!! Even Ana came over who probably drove the furthest. Thanks again to all! Friday morning was pretty interesting to watch as all of you came streaming in and scrambled to find what you were looking for. Just to make it more exciting, I tucked a few of the good ones away behind more taller, common ones to make you work harder to find them. Even the volunteers swore prior to opening, that some of the crotons on the list were not there. But ha!!!
And like Mike said, there's still some more nice ones for this up coming weekend.

Terrific sale - we had a great time, and it was so nice to see everyone again, especially since we can't make it down to S. FL very often anymore.

And I always love looking around the shadehouse at all the beautiful palms.

We picked up a couple of Dreer #7 (current favorite), a Compte de Germiny, a Gloriosa to replace my "missing" one, another Chief (!) and a Rudy Bachman. Last time I'm going to try the Bachman, btw - does anyone else have trouble keeping this one happy?

And I finally got a little Chambey flamethrower. I've always wanted one. :)

- The cart parking lot a few minutes after opening on Friday morning. The entrance to the shadehouse has often become this familiar choke point at the peak of the rush. We have tried saving space specifically for parking carts, but that idea went away as soon as Jeff began to run out of room for plants. I was only able to get this shot by standing on a step-ladder.

- Croton lust in its purest form... The debates over identification are one of the more entertaining high points.
