Having been to Scott's place, I can only say that the pics, lovely as they are, don't do it full justice.

Love that lake, gators and all . . . . .

Dave, These are older pics of the garden. Winter has not been kind this year, and it looks like crap now. Dave I have another thread on here with Butia Hybrid Pictures, please post the pic of the two Butigrus I sent you. I want to see how they are doing out on the west coast. Scott

Scott,

I was sorry to hear about your winter weather back there, and was hoping your hybrids would be OK with it. Hopefully you didn't lose anything. And with summer on the way, the growth you guys get should erase any bad memories quickly.

How cold did you really get? And did you get some ideas as to the relative hardiness of the species you have?

I received 2 nites of 29f and frost, and 2 low 30s and frost. Have had a total of 13 hrs below freezing temps. 100% frond damage to: C.obtusa, A.pinnata and R.farinifera. 80%-90% damage L.benthamii, R.rivularis, R.regia and C.mitis. 40% damage to older fronds of P.rupicola. Minor frond damage to: P.theo (new spears), L.muelleri (N. side fronds), D.lutchens, A.cunninghamiana, W.bifurcata, A aculeata and H.lagenicaulis 5' (potted and put on it side and covered). The shockers with no damage: 3 A.merrillii 6'+ (1, S. facing wall of house, 2 under palm canopy) and a C.nucifera 3' ( no yellowing or spots, under palm canopy). I have seen the following damage in the neighborhood: B.nobilis (green form) 100% , D.decaryi 70%-80%,P.roebelenii (0%-90%), W.bifureata (50%-100%), H. lagenicaulis and H.verschaffeltti (100%) .

Scott,

Thanks for the concise info. It's always good to hear those kind of stories for reference.

Can I assume your "hardy hybrids" were all unaffected?

Dean, The hybrids did great and are still pushing growth and flowers. Scott

That's good to know. When you initially said, "Winter has not been kind this year, and it looks like crap now," I was starting to worry.

I know what it feels like though. And when it comes so close to the end of the "danger period," it's even more of a bummer.

At least it sounds like you really didn't actually lose too much. (Easy for me to say :) )

Wow Scott!
Much growth in these last four years!

I take it your S. maurtiiformis didn't make it, being I don't remember seeing it the other day...
Looks like yours was fully exposed... maybe full sun...
Or is it still there...

...You should update this thread
The Majesty and C.albas growth is wild!

~Ray.

BTW- I got another sosobigbuc if you know anyone lookin'... Almost two inches of wood! Three inch caliper! 15gal.

Ray, After 2009 a lot of the wimpy palms were removed including the S. maurtiiformis. I may plant the buc you gave me this weekend.

I wouldn't plant it out in the 'open'
But I'd damn shure plant it!
Next time your out this aways, gimme a hollar...
I'll show ya how to do S. maurti in the TampaBay area!
muauauhahhahahhah

~Ray.

My Mulies bigger now. I swear!

Ray, The Buc will be planted on the east side of the lake under taller palm canopy. That area is frost-free and warmer than the upper garden by a few degrees on the colder nights.

Man, your place sure looks nice Scott.

I am in the process of putting in a little pond - and I just drool at your lake. :)

Have you put those thoughts of Lake Havasu on the back burner for now?

I was going to respond that I don't see a beautiful palm surrounded lake in the backyard - but then there is Lake Havasu. I used to go fishing there, and it's quite a lake, especially in a boat way up near the dam as the sun comes up. Now Spring Break around town is another story. :)

Those are really cool. They are pleasant to the eyes. I love trees and these palm trees are really great! Oh, wow. It boosts my spirit to start planting again!
