I'll let Scott answer that, as he probably has more experience in that area - and it would probably be more accurate.
If I had to offer advice, I would say they are similar. And like any family of plants, some do better than others. as a rule they would rather have it tropical year round. But it is hard to kill them outright and they come back quickly enough that in a warm summer climate like you have, they would be looking good up until it got cold. The big difference is that the cane could be cut and stored through the winter for propagation in early spring - easily.

Keith, I have never lost a Cordyline to the cold here, can not say that about the Crotons. I have Cordyline that are 8'+ tall, will not see that here with a Croton. No leaf drop on the Cordylines due to cold winds/temps. Planting Cordyline under canopy of palms/trees, have not been damaged by any winter temps here so far in 15yrs.

Ti plants are far more hardy than crotons where I live in California. I have friends who live in areas that experience winter frost every few years and they usually lose all their crotons that are exposed to it. Ti plants, on the other hand, will have their tops killed, but then send out numerous branches farther down the cane when the weather warms up in the spring. Ti plants are supposedly hardy down to zone 8 according to the literature, although I might question that.

Here is a picture of HY 1. It is a creation of Howard Yakamoto. He raised many new seedlings in Hawaii, but didn't name them. They would go by HY and then the number.

1) Emerald - This is darker green than the common greens and the leaves are held in a more upright position.
2) Monte Cristo - This one was grown in too much sun, so is bleached out. In the shade the color of the white you see is a soft flamingo pink.

Thanks for all the great pictures Scott. I also think that Pink Majic is a sport of Black Majic, but no one has confirmed this.

Your yard pictures look great! I like the way you have clumped the same cultivar together to get a dramatic display. I wish mine looked as good. Here in California, many types have brown spotting on the leaves and lose a lot of older leaves at this time of year. It's because they do not like our extended cool weather season. No frost, but days in the 60s and nights in the 40s or 50s for quite a few months.
I'm flying into Ft. Lauderdale this Friday and am going to loop around the state visiting relatives and friends. Tentatively I will be in the Tampa area Tues. afternoon, leaving Wed. to go back across to the East coast. Any chance of meeting you and seeing your yard? That might not be possible if you work during the day. Also, are there any nurseries in your area that have a good selection of ti and crotons that would be worth stopping at?

How great! Thanks. I saw the Croton tour posted after I left this thread and told them I would like to come. I like crotons as well as ti plants, but ti plants do much better in my climate. Croton hardiness and root rot susceptibility vary a lot and I have often lost some of the nicer varieties to root rot in the winter. The ti plants may get a little grungy, but they snap back right away with warmer weather.

I'm with Putu. Do you spray or use a systemic on your Ti Plants?
