Thanks a bunch for the pics Dave. I would tend to argue with you - they look pretty good to me for the middle of Dec.

I am constantly amazed. I keep thinking I could never see one I haven't seen before, and then I see a half dozen. :)

After planting White Babydoll in the ground the white color is now really looking good.

Scott,

That "white" looks remarkably free from sun burn. It must be in the shade. I have found it interesting how the white on some plants holds up well, while on others it burns, even in full shade.

Dean, Gets a few hours of sun in late afternoon only. The sun is low now, I will watch it next summer.

The Ti plants after the freeze... not bad

Found these four on the markdown rack yesterday. I already have these (Bolero,Sensation,Kiwi and Gold Edge) but at $1 each I could not pass them up. For some reason I can not pass up on Kiwi, I already have four.

Nice haul.

I didn't think there was anything that only sold for $1 anymore.

Right place right time, also saw 3 gal (leafless) Croton Dreadlocks for $1. Got these two Ti plants for 2.50 each. 1) Byrons Diamonds, a new one for me and :p I could not pass up on another Maria.

Dean, My thought was Miss Andrea (on my want list for 3 yrs) when I first saw it. It looks like yours in post #5. The labal name is Chocolate. I have Chocolate so I know Chocolate is wrong. My goal for 2010 is to add 50 Ti plants with 25 being new. The score so far is 5 new and 8 repeats, for a total of 13 so far.

Here are two pictures of the parent plant and two pictures of the only non-totally-green seedling. This seedling had a hint of red from the very first leaves... I'm hoping it will be interesting.:D

Here's an update!
All these except for the two tallest tis are from seed!

Hi Scott! I think chocolate is the renaming of Miss Andrea... because I've also seen Miss Andrea labeled as chocolate. (maybe another mistake?) A lot of growers over here rename tis so you think it is something new when it's not... it could be an honest mistake but it is annoying!

Hi Angela, I know you really like the Tis and I was remulching the Ti Garden and took a few new overall pics for you. They look as if we had a mild winter. Enjoy...

Hi Angela,

Your right, the second picture in post #5, is Miss Andrea. To make a long story short, I came across this plant about 15 years ago in Thailand, brought it back, showed it to my good friend and author B. Frank Brown and he said he had never seen it before. He then sent the pictures over to the Cordyline Society in Australia and they had never seen it before or had records of it. Frank then asked me to name it, so I did, after my wife. (who you know;)

Unfortunately, anyone can call it what they want. But here in the "trade", it's known as Miss Andrea and is in tissue culture.

Here is another Ti, that I am questioning the name. Chocolate Dancer described as " Sport of Miss Andrea. Slightly darker markings on leaves. But there isn't much difference in the two cultivars. Tends to stay short and branch profusely."

It does appear subtly different - but like crotons, when is "enough enough?" :)

Yeah, another plant with the name game problems. The Ti plants were my first choice for color in my garden. But different varities are much harder to find than Crotons. I got caught up in the Croton hunting the last 2 yrs and let the Ti's take a backseat. That is going to change this year, as Ti's are better suited to the my colder winter weather. Let the hunt begin :D

I love cordylines.... I think I am hooked now. I haven't got to them before because they don't seem to like our full sun garden. Now that we have a bit of canopy... I can plant more & more. I just bought 5 new ones - waiting for them to arrive now.... I have a few in the garden now... and as the canopy grows more, I will add more...

Regards, Ari :)

Ari,

They are planted all over Hawaii almost exclusively in full sun. Although some prefer a little shade, some also prefer sun. But I am aware that your sun may be harsher than ours. I think most don't want full shade, even where you live.

No.... most of mine are planted in morning sun, except for a few that can take full sun all day every day... But all the morning sun positions are all taken at the moment.... Once they look good, I will take photos of them.

Regards, Ari :)

Update from post #75. This Red Sister seedling has nice color and is now about 4 yrs old. Sorry about the oak pollen on the leaves but it is the season for it here now.

About half of my seed germinated ti's turned out true, the other half are of a similar variation. I do have one that's just an oddball thin leaf which is totally different.

Here's an update on the tis from seed! One looks like it is going to have the same growing habit as New Guinea black but with pink and green leaves instead. The other has dark green, very shiny juno leaves with purple edges. Still waiting to see what colors it's going to be. It's been my experience that tis from seed don't show there true colors until they are over a foot high or taller.
