does this palm grow well in southern california?

It depends on what you call "well." It is marginal, but will grow. I would say you can get it to grow well if you provide the perfect micro-climate.

My experience is that full all day sun is too much. But you can also give it too much shade in the cooler/coastal locations. It is worth a try though.

i got a small one gallon and it seems to be doing good so far!

First couple of winters in the ground will let you know if you have the right location.
